The Assam government on Friday directed immediate action against web portals and social media users engaged in spreading fake and false news in the state.
State chief secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna on Friday held a discussion on the rapid increase of news portals n the state with commissioner and secretary of information and public relations department Preetom Saikia and director Anupam Choudhury.
“It has come to the notice of the government that most of the times some news portals have been involved in disseminating fake, false and fabricated news,” an official release stated.
“There is a huge possibility of these having an adverse impact on the upcoming generation,” it added.
“False information and fake news circulated in news portals and social media may harm the society,” the release added.
“Social media is exploited by many for their vested interests,” the meeting further stated.
