The Assam government has directed all the deputy commissioners, superintendents of police and Guwahati police commissioner to ensure the safety of people from Mizoram staying in areas under their jurisdiction.
The directive comes as the situation in Assam remains tense after the killing of 7 people including 6 Assam Police personnel during an attack by Mizoram Police and goons on July 26, 2021.
In a circular issued on Thursday, MS Manivannan, commissioner & secretary to the home department of Assam, also asked the DC of Kamrup (M), Guwahati police commissioner, the DC and SP of Cachar district to ensure safety of the people from Mizoram, who are staying at Mizoram Houses in Guwahati and Silchar.
“In view of the recent skirmishes between Assam and Mizoram Police and taking into account the tense situation on the aforesaid Inter-State Border, the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (M), Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, and Superintendent of Police, Cachar are hereby directed to ensure the safety and security of all persons belonging to Mizoram staying at Mizoram Houses at Guwahati and Silchar,” the circular reads.
Asking all the DCs and SPs to ensure safety of people from Mizoram, the commissioner & secretary to the state home department in the directive said: “All the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police shall ensure safety and security of people belonging to Mizoram who are residing in areas under their jurisdiction.”
On Thursday, a group of members from Bir Lachit Sena, a socio-political organisation of Assam, led by Shringkhal Chaliha, staged a demonstration in front of the Mizoram House in Guwahati in protest against the killing of 6 Assam Police personnel and a civilian by Mizoram Police and goons.
However, the Guwahati police did not allow the group to move forward towards the Mizoram House, located at GS Road in Old Post Office area as they sought to hoist Assamese gamosa in the Mizoram House.
