The Assam government has decided to confer the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award for National Integration and National Contribution on Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu.
The award will be presented to Naidu during his proposed visit to Assam on October 3 as decided by the Assam Cabinet on Friday.
The award has been named after Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, a great freedom fighter and Assam’s first chief minister after India’s independence.
The prize amount of the biennial award was reportedly increased to Rs 5 lakh from Rs two lakh. The award also carries a citation.
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi is called the architect of modern Assam. He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna for his contributions to the society in1999.
The award became irregular over the years and the Assam Cabinet in its meeting chaired by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday resolved to scrupulously make the award a biennial affair.
Besides, the Assam Cabinet decided to change the names of the state’s highest civilian awards, to be given in various fields.
It has been reported that the Assam Ratna award will be known as Asom Baibhav, Assam Vibhushan as Asom Saurav and Assam Bhusan and Assam Shree award as Asom Gaurav.
