Guwahati: The Assam government has approved 12 per cent horizontal reservation for eligible Ex-Agniveers in specified government posts, with annual recruitment drives set to begin in 2027.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on social media platform X, stating that the initiative aims to recognise the service of former Agniveers and expand their employment opportunities after their tenure in the Indian Armed Forces.

According to a notification issued by the Home (A) Department, the decision follows the Assam Cabinet meeting held on October 4, 2026. The reservation will apply to direct recruitment vacancies in designated posts and will be implemented through annual recruitment drives.

Who is eligible for the reservation?

The benefit will be available to eligible Ex-Agniveers who meet specific criteria. Applicants must be permanent residents of Assam, have joined the armed forces under the Agnipath Scheme and completed the full four-year term of service in the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force.

They must also possess an official Agniveer Certificate issued at the time of discharge to qualify for the reservation.

Departments covered under the scheme

The 12 per cent reservation will apply to specified posts in several state departments and services. These include Assam Police, the Forest Department, Fire and Emergency Services, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Prisons, Home Guards and the Excise Department.

The notification sets out the framework for implementing the reservation in direct recruitment. Details of the specific posts covered, recruitment schedules and application procedures will be determined under the applicable guidelines.

The state government said the initiative seeks to recognise the discipline, skills and experience that former Agniveers bring from their military service while providing them with further opportunities to serve in Assam’s public sector.

Annual recruitment drives are scheduled to begin in 2027.
