Gorkha Mahotsav 2026
The event is expected to become a major cultural and community-centric festival in Upper Assam, showcasing the growing socio-cultural presence of the Gorkha community in the region.

Digboi: The Gorkha Mahotsav 2026 is scheduled to be held from January 29 to 31 at Rajgarh near Khuwang in Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

The event is expected to become a major cultural and community-centric festival in Upper Assam, showcasing the growing socio-cultural presence of the Gorkha community in the region.

Organised by the Gorkha Development Council (GDC), Government of Assam, the three-day festival aims to showcase the rich traditions of the Gorkha community while providing a platform to articulate its developmental aspirations.

Community leaders view the Mahotsav as a significant opportunity to strengthen unity and enhance visibility in a region where the Gorkhas form a substantial section of the population.

The festival will feature traditional Gorkha music and dance performances, folk art, ethnic cuisine, and cultural exhibitions, with participation expected from cultural troupes across the State.

Organisers said the mahotsav has been structured not merely as a cultural showcase but also as a means to engage the younger generation and encourage a sustained connection with traditional practices.

The choice of Dibrugarh, a key administrative and economic hub of Upper Assam, has added prominence to the event, placing it firmly on the regionโ€™s cultural calendar. While interacting with NeNow, Mr. Tamang said that the mahotsav reflects a broader vision that combines cultural preservation with inclusive development.

He added that the programmes are aimed at fostering community cohesion, empowering youth, and reinforcing the Gorkha communityโ€™s contribution to Assamโ€™s diverse social fabric.

Tamang also informed that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is likely to grace the occasion, a possibility that has generated widespread enthusiasm among Gorkhas across the State. โ€œAll Gorkhas of Assam are waiting with excitement,โ€ he said, adding that the Chief Ministerโ€™s presence would be a meaningful gesture of encouragement and recognition.

Observers note that the Mahotsav assumes added importance at a time when ethnic communities across Assam are increasingly seeking sustained dialogue and institutional support from the government.

The Gorkha community, spread across tea garden areas, urban centres, and border regions, has long emphasised the need for focused attention on cultural recognition, welfare initiatives, and development-oriented policies.

Under the leadership of Tamang, the Gorkha Development Council has expanded its activities, with increased emphasis on education, skill development, cultural infrastructure, and welfare programmes. The upcoming Mahotsav, he said, aligns with this broader agenda of inclusive growth and community empowerment.

As preparations gather pace, the Gorkha Mahotsav 2026 is expected to draw participants from across the State, reinforcing its position as a significant cultural event while underscoring the evolving role and aspirations of the Gorkha community in Assamโ€™s public life.
