Dibrugarh: In a daylight robbery, miscreants snatched gold chains worth approximately Rs 12 lakh from a man at the entrance of the District Commissionerโs Office in Assam’s Dibrugarh, one of the districtโs most sensitive and secure locations.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon in the presence of security personnel and amid regular public movement, raising concerns about security arrangements in the area.
According to reports, the victim has been identified as Hrishikesh Goswami, a resident of Madarkhat in Lahowal.
He had arrived at the District Commissionerโs Office in an auto-rickshaw for some personal work. As he was climbing the staircase leading to the office premises, two motorcycle-borne snatchers allegedly targeted him and carried out the crime.
The accused were reportedly wearing full-face helmets and masks to conceal their identities. In a matter of seconds, they snatched two gold chains weighing around 18 tolas from the victimโs neck and fled the scene before anyone could react.
As per the complainant, the stolen jewellery is estimated to be worth nearly Rs 12 lakh.
The incident at the entrance of a highly secured government office has raised concerns and questions about the effectiveness of existing security measures at the District Commissionerโs Office complex.
Following the incident, Hrishikesh Goswami lodged an FIR at the Milan Nagar Police Outpost. Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify and trace the culprits.
Further investigation is underway.
