Sonia Deori Covid19

A girl from Narayanpur in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, who died of Covid19 in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, was cremated in her village in a symbolic way.

The token cremation was performed by her family members and fellow villagers with her photograph and personal belongings.

Sonia, daughter of Tarsing Deori, a resident of Bordeori gaon in Narayanpur, breathed her last in the trauma centre of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi.

She had been working in the national capital since 2008 in a marketing company.

An ex-member of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Sonia graduated from Madhabdev College (now University) at Narayanpur and did her Masters from Allahabad University.

She was cremated in New Delhi by an NGO as her mortal remains could not be sent to her home and in her native village at Bordeori gaon, a token cremation was performed by her family members and fellow villagers on Thursday.

Her death has been deeply mourned by the Deori Sahitya Sabha.

Newly-elected Deori Sahitya Sabha president Kiranban Deori in his condolence message: “The news of the demise of Sonia Deori, who was working in New Delhi for 10 years, due to Covid19, has shocked not only the people of Assam but also the Deori society.”

“The Deori Sahitya Sabha and Joydam Mechu have expressed deep condolence at her sudden demise. We wish her departed soul rest in peace,” said the Deori Sahitya Sabha president added.

He also expressed his condolence towards Sonia’s bereaved family members.
