Assam gets X-Band Doppler Weather Radar for better, timely forecasts

Guwahati: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Assam University in Silchar in connection with the installation of a state-of-the-art X-Band Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at the university’s campus.

The MoU was signed by Registrar of Assam University, PK Nath, and Scientist-G and Head of the Guwahati-based Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), KN Mohan.

The X-Band DWR will help in research as well as improving weather forecasting especially for Assam’s Cachar district and its nearby region.

Notably, the IMD is installing various types of meteorological instruments in the Northeastern states, including a total of 11 Doppler Radars in the region.

Scientists of the RMC Sanjay O’Neill Shaw and SI Laskar, and Scientific Assistant (SA) from the IMD Rajnikant Nirala were present on the occasion.

From the Assam University, Vice Chancellor (VC) RM Pant, Director of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Piyush Kumar Pandey, Finance Officer Shubhadeep Dhar and Controller of Examinations Suprabir Roy were present on the occasion.

Director of College Development Council Jayant Bhatta, Dean of the School of Ecology and Environmental Science Parthankar Choudhury, and Atri Deshmukhya from the Department of Physics of Assam University were also present.
