Guwahati: Amid the worsening flood situation in Assam, state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday urged the government to expedite relief, rescue and rehabilitation measures for people affected across the state.
As part of his visit to inundated areas in the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, Gogoi met displaced residents, took stock of the damage caused by the floods and handed over relief items to affected families.
He said the flood crisis continues to cause widespread distress in Assam, including parts of Jorhat, with many households losing their homes and sources of income, while the disaster has also claimed several lives.
Government figures show that the floods have so far affected nearly 5.65 lakh people in 12 districts, with the death toll reaching 31.
Gogoi, who serves as the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, said he spoke with flood-hit residents to understand their immediate requirements and also met officials and volunteers involved in relief operations.
He said the government’s immediate focus should be on providing prompt assistance, including shelter, healthcare services, relief supplies and rehabilitation support to affected families.
The Congress leader also sought enhanced relief measures, financial assistance for bereaved families and quicker steps to restore normal life in the affected areas.
He added that the party would remain engaged with the evolving flood situation and continue voicing the concerns of affected communities wherever necessary.
