Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday entered the Assembly election race by submitting his nomination from the Jorhat constituency, marking his first attempt in a state-level poll.
Currently serving as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gogoi began his day by visiting several places of worship across Jorhat before setting off on a public march that started from Jorhat Stadium.
The procession drew a significant crowd and continued for nearly three hours before concluding at the District Commissionerโs office, where he completed the nomination process.
As part of his outreach, Gogoi visited a gurdwara, Borde Gosani Temple, Macharhat Bor Namghar, Tarajan Mosque, and a church located on Jail Road, interacting with people from different communities at each stop.
Speaking to the public, he said that citizens in Assam are looking for openness in governance and added that his party is working toward bringing greater accountability. He described the election as a moment for change, stating that voters now have a chance to reshape the political environment in the state.
Gogoi also remarked that the tone of political discussions in Assam has weakened over time and has drawn attention beyond the state. He said the Congress is campaigning with a focus on building a better and more inclusive Assam, expressing confidence that voters will make informed choices.
Extending his support to party candidates in the district, he conveyed his best wishes to nominees from Jorhat, including Pran Kurmi from Titabar and Pallavi Saikia Gogoi from Teok, along with candidates from allied parties.
In Jorhat, Gogoi will face BJP leader and sitting MLA Hitendranath Goswami, who has represented the constituency multiple times, both as an AGP member earlier and later as a BJP candidate.
