Guwahati: Gauhati University authorities have temporarily closed down two boys’ hostels–RCC-1 and RCC-2–following a violent clash between students of the two hostels on September 27.
The incident reportedly involved outsiders and miscreants, resulting in severe injuries to multiple students and security personnel. Some of the injured are in intensive care units (ICUs) at local hospitals.

According to a university notification issued on Monday (September 30) , the clashes led to the temporary closure of both RCC-1 and RCC-2 boys’ hostels with immediate effect. This decision aims to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of students.
The university authorities have assured that the academic activities of the affected students will not be hampered.
Alternative hostel accommodations within the campus have already been arranged for the inmates of the two hostels, said a notification issued by the Registrar of Gauhati University.

To accommodate the displaced students, the university is utilizing temporary housing options including the Guest House, UGC-MMTTC, Alumni House, and Old Recreation Centre besides shifting some students to AT -4, AT -5 , AT -7, AT-9 (Law), AT-10, RCC-3 and RCC-4 boys hostels.
Debasish Saikia, Assistant Professor of Instrumentation & USIC, will oversee the well-being of students housed in these temporary facilities.
The varsity authorities have asked the students to vacate their current rooms within 48 hours (by 4:00 pm on October 2).
The authority will provide transportation facilities to the inmates to facilitate their smooth transition.
The university is working closely with the District Administration and City Police to investigate the cause of the clashes and ensure the safety of all students, the notification added.
