Guwahati: Gauhati University on Friday conducted a Facebook Live session to address confusion among students regarding the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) and other academic matters, following the spread of misinformation on social media.
The session lasted over an hour and featured senior university officials, including Utpal Sarma, Registrar; Rajiv Handique, Academic Registrar; Sanjay Kumar Dutta, OSD to the Vice Chancellor; and Akashdeep Goswami, Deputy Controller of Examinations.
They responded to student queries related to academic programmes, examinations, results and institutional policies.
โThis initiative reflects the Universityโs firm commitment to counter misinformation and ensure that students receive accurate information directly from official sources,โ said Sarma, Registrar.
โWe have observed a significant increase in the misuse of social media platforms by vested interests to spread misleading information regarding FYUGP, the alleged discontinuation of courses and departments, examination-related matters, and other academic issues. This Facebook Live session was conceived as a transparent and direct platform to engage with students, address their concerns, and provide factual clarifications,โ he added.
In recent weeks, reports of rumours related to FYUGP, FYIMP, examination results and the status of various courses had prompted the University to issue clarifications and communicate directly with students.
Although the session was organised mainly to address FYUGP-related concerns, students raised questions on multiple academic issues. The University said the session saw nearly 500 live participants at its peak.
The discussion covered topics such as the advantages of a four-year undergraduate programme over a three-year course, the difference between Honours and Honours with Research, eligibility criteria for Honours with Research, eligibility for PhD admissions, the process for colleges seeking approval to offer the fourth year, and other aspects related to the National Education Policy (NEP).
University officials said students can continue to submit queries through Gauhati Universityโs official social media channels.
The University also announced plans to introduce a dedicated helpline email address for faster grievance redressal. Regarding examinations and results, officials said pending results are expected to be declared within the next 30 days.
The University urged students to make use of the opportunities under the National Education Policy.
It said that while any major academic transition may raise concerns, continued engagement between students, colleges and the administration would support smooth implementation of the NEP and improvement of higher education standards in the region.
