Gas smell felt in Assam’s Kokrajhar town on Sunday evening created a sensation among the people of the area.
Many people of the town continued sharing posts on Facebook regarding the smell.
Fearing danger, one of the Facebook users said the people should be alerted regarding the matter.
“Feeling of Gas Smell in Fakiragram Town…….. and also got some message in facebook that smell in Kokrajhar too…So please aware and try to get the reason??? As concentration is so high……Aware….Aware…….,” a Facebook user wrote.
The reason behind the smell is yet to be ascertained.
A Facebook user wrote: “I can get some smell like gas leakage in Kokrajhar town, and many of my friends too have felt it. What may be the reason?”
“May be due to train oil/gas tanker transportation. There is no smell in Northern side even in holtugaon tinali,” reads another Facebook post.
When contacted, Kokrajhar deputy commissioner Barnali Deka told Northeast Now that the Dhaligaon-based BRPL plant has been informed regarding the smell and urged to take necessary measures.
She said the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) personnel have also been put on alert.
Deka said, “A BRPL (Bongaigaon Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd) team is coming to Kokrajhar town to find out the cause of the small. They will check if there is any leakage in the gas pipeline in the town.”
“We have received no information regarding leakage from any gas tanker in the town,” she added.
