A former Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan on Monday shot his wife, son, and one of his close relatives at Hakunpukuri area in Dibrugarh.

The former jawan has been identified as Sanjay Das.

The former jawan’s wife, Swapna Das, died on the way to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH).

His son, Nabojyoti Das (20), and relative Ghana Kanta Hazarika (76) were also rushed to the AMCH in critical conditions where they succumbed to injuries.

According to the neighbours, Sanjay is an alcoholic and sometimes created nuisance in his residence and scuffled with his wife and son.

“Sanjay takes alcohol regularly at his residence and sometimes he created nuisance in the entire area,” alleged one of his neighbours.

“Today, we heard the sound of bullets from his residence and saw that he shot dead his wife and son. He also shot one of his relatives,” the neighbour added.

Dibrugarh superintendent of police (SP) Sreejith T. reached the spot and started investigations.

Police recovered three empty cartridges from the spot.

Police have launched a manhunt to nab him.

Dibrugarh superintendent of police, Sreejith T. said, “The person, identified as Sanjay Das, shot dead his wife at his residence.”

“He also shot his son and one of his relatives with his .32 pistol.”

“We have recovered three empty cartridges from the spot and two live bullets are still with him,” said the district police chief.

The Dibrugarh Police chief also said: “He had a criminal history and is an alcoholic. Till now, we cannot ascertain why he had committed the crime. We are investigating the case and have launched a manhunt to nab him.”

The Dibrugarh SP also said the former jawan is a habitual gambler and has taken loans from many persons.

“He is mentally unsound and he was in an inebriated condition when he committed the crime. We have collected evidence from the crime scene,” the SP said.
