A former Superintendent of Police of Darrang district in Assam has finally made his way to lead the Punjab Police as the new Director-General of Police (Head of Police Force)! He is the third DGP in Punjab in the span of the last three months.

Viresh Kumar Bhawra –an IPS officer of the 1987 batch initially had joined the Assam and Meghalaya cadre and after rendering his sincere service in Nagaon and Jorhat district as Additional Superintendent of Police, he joined Darrang district as the 5th Superintendent of Police in 1992.

Though he served the district for just two months eight days from September 4 to November 11 in 1992 as the Superintendent of Police in Darrang, within this very short period of his service Bhawra could imprint his image as an honest and people-friendly senior police officer.

He drew attention of the people for his strict vigilance on corruption.

He even caught two Sub Inspectors of Police red-handed while they were collecting money from truck drivers on NH-52 and arrested both the officers.

At the same time, he maintained a very cordial relationship with the common people.

However, he later changed his cadre from Assam to Punjab.

On Monday night while talking to Northeast Now over the phone, Viresh Kumar Bhawra wished the people of Darrang a very happy New Year and Bhogali Bihu in Assamese.
