Former All Assam Students Union (AASU) leader, Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Thursday took charge as the president of the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) after seeking the blessings of his mother and people of the state.

The regional party has gained its full stature in state politics after AJP members took charge in different capacities during the party’s convention in Assam’s Sivasagar district.

Addressing the public, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “Today a new regionalism has taken shape.”

Gogoi also criticized the ruling BJP state government as well as other national parties on the occasion.

While former tourism minister, Jagadish Bhuyan took charge as AJP general secretary, Patacharkuchi MLA Pabindra Deka was announced the party’s new executive president.

The Patacharkuchi MLA had recently resigned from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to join the regional party.

The regional party took several important decisions during the two-day convention that began on Wednesday.

Several artists also showcased the dance forms of the different indigenous communities of the state during a cultural programme organized on the occasion.
