An ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each was paid by the Jorhat district administration on Monday to the next of kin of two minor girls died due to floods in the district.

The two deaths due to floods were reported from Teok and Jorhat West Revenue Circles on Saturday.

One of the victims was four-year-old girl Saniya Tahu from No 2 Kawoimari Bonoria Mising village under Teok Revenue Circle and the other victim was 8-year-old Sen Das from Belguri Chinaichuk village under Jorhat West Revenue Circle.

The flood situation in the district has worsened with increase in the number of affected people to 64,692 from 47,690 though the number of villages has decreased from 77 on Sunday to 75 on Monday.

A Jorhat district administration official stated that four relief camps have given shelter to the flood-hit people in the district.

Vast area of cropland has been affected and a large number of cattle heads too have been affected.

Ferry services to and from Majuli and Jorhat remain suspended with the river Brahmaputra in spate and flowing above the danger level.
