Huge stretches of areas at lower Majuli, the river island district of Assam have been submerged by the surging waters of Brahmaputra and Subansiri Rivers.

The flood has been caused by the delay in construction of the sluice gate at the embankment of Gualgaon-Kakrita region of lower Majuli.

The water from the overflowing rivers flooded the plains breaching the embankment

The embankment and the sluice gates were sanctioned way back in 2013 with NABARD funding of Rs 7.50 crore.

But the Water Resources Department due to its slackness could not complete the embankment and the sluice gates till date leading to a deplorable state of affairs for the people living in the plains of lower Majuli.

As a result several areas of the river island district has been flooded by the overflowing Brahmaputra making lives miserable for the local villagers.

The residents of the villages in lower Majuli are facing the second spate of floods this season.

The rising water levels in Brahmaputra and Subansiri Rivers have flooded newer areas adding woes to the hapless villagers.

The overflowing Brahmaputra has flooded at least 10 villages in lower Majuli.

Large tracts of cropland are also under flood water.

Even the livestock are having a harrowing time with lack of food because of the flood.
