Guwahati: Police and local residents seized five firearms and 13 rounds of live ammunition in two separate incidents in Assam’s Golaghat and Kamrup districts, with four persons detained in connection with the recoveries.
In Golaghat, police conducted an operation at Chungajan in Sarupathar and seized four pistols along with live ammunition. A youth identified as Rakhal Sheel, reportedly from Dimapur in Nagaland, was detained in connection with the recovery.
According to police, the seized firearms comprised two 7.65 mm pistols and two .22 pistols, along with 13 rounds of live ammunition. A torchlight and a bag containing plastic material were also recovered from his possession.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged transportation of the firearms, including their intended destination and purpose. The detained youth is being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
In a separate incident in Kamrup district, local residents detained three persons in the Kosorua area of Hajo after allegedly finding them in possession of a pistol.
The three individuals were identified as Vishal Moria, Kuldeep and Akash Moria, all reportedly from Uttar Pradesh. Residents intercepted the trio and subsequently handed them over to the police.
A pistol and around Rs 1 lakh in cash were reportedly recovered from their possession.
Police have taken the three individuals into custody and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the firearm and cash.
