The pilot project for Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) centre, which started functioning in Assam’s Silchar has started to yield positive results.

The project started from July 13 last and was launched in presence of minister Parimal Suklabaidya; MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, and other MLAs of Cachar district.

Just after a month of its commissioning, the first and foremost valuable product from garbage to gold project, an ‘egg shell powder’, made from egg shell wastes collected so far, was ‘sold’ among the legislators of Cachar district on Wednesday evening.

In a meeting held at the conference hall of Cachar deputy commissioner’s Office, MP from Silchar, Dr Rajdeep Roy, legislators Dilip Kumar Paul, Mihir Kanti Shome, Kishore Nath, Amar Chand Jain and Rajdeep Gowala, purchased the egg shell powder.

It has been prepared by Swacch Sundor Silchar women federation members, formed out of the volunteers working for Solid Liquid Resource Management.

“This egg shell powder is very rich in calcium that can be used as fertilizers for the plants, which in turn, helps reduce the pH level of soil and enhance the soil productivity,” informed, a member of the Swacch Sundor Silchar campaign.

In an innovative step by the district administration of Cachar to promote use of cloth bags in place of plastic bags and provide alternate livelihood to the unemployed, these cloth bags made by women folk of Self Help Groups (SHGs), were gifted away to all the dignitaries who attended the Bhumi Pujan for mini secretariat at Srikona on Tuesday last.

Deputy commissioner, Laya Madduri, speaking to Northeast Now, said, “Change should begin at home. From now onwards, we will be replacing bouquet of flowers and sweets with cotton bags as gifts and jute files and folders made by SHGs instead of plastic folders in every workplace and government functions.”

“We are getting tremendous response from the people of Silchar in our endeavour to reduce single-use plastic, for which, I am very much hopeful that we can make Silchar, plastic free, in the days and months to come,” said, DC Laya Madduri.
