North Lakhimpur: A major eviction drive was carried out in Assamโs Lakhimpur district on Friday, with the Revenue Department demolishing a weekly market and other unauthorised structures built on government land in Bihpuria.
The operation at Bihpuria was part of four other eviction drives to be conducted across the district. The other locations included Balijan and Koilamari under North Lakhimpur Revenue Circle, Bogeenadi under Kadam Revenue Circle, and No. 1 Dharmapur under Bihpuria Revenue Circle.
At Dharmapur Saturday Weekly Haat, a demolition team equipped with bulldozers arrived in the morning, accompanied by officials of the Bihpuria Revenue Circle and security personnel.
The team supervised the demolition of 32 pucca buildings housing various shops at the weekly market, along with one residential building, to clear the government land of unauthorised occupations.
According to the district administration, occupants of the structures at the weekly market and other residents occupying government land had been served prior notices ahead of the eviction drive.
Following the notices, many occupants voluntarily removed their unauthorised constructions, facilitating the smooth execution of the operation.
Speaking to the media at the eviction site, Bihpuria Circle Officer Namita Bora said that approximately three bighas of government land had been cleared of unauthorised constructions and occupations during the operation.
Bora said the eviction drive was conducted peacefully with cooperation from local residents.
“The eviction drive is being carried out without any hindrance. We have full cooperation from the local public. We made prior communications and consultations with the concerned locals and therefore we’ve no problems here,” she said.
The district-wide operations were aimed at clearing government land of unauthorised occupations across the four locations.
