Guwahati: The Assam government has introduced a new expedited mechanism that allows Deputy Commissioners to directly order deportations within 24 hours of receiving specific complaints, bypassing the tribunal system altogether.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the move while speaking about the stateโ€™s ongoing eviction drive.

โ€œNow the government has introduced a new facility. If a specific complaint is received, a tribunal is no longer required. The Deputy Commissioner can directly take action and deport the person from the country within 24 hours,โ€ Sarma said.

He urged citizens to report such cases directly to Deputy Commissioners.

The announcement comes amid the stateโ€™s large-scale land recovery operations. Sarma said the government has so far reclaimed 1.6 lakh bighas of land out of a total 12 lakh bighas under review.

โ€œMany have been freed, but many more still remain. The process will continue,โ€ he said, adding that eviction operations are currently underway in Hojai and will expand district by district.

Sarma said the government will continue the eviction drive without pause, while authorities identify and deport illegal entrants.

He described the measures as necessary to ensure safety, security and the rule of law in the state.

The chief minister said the operations will proceed in phases as officials systematically cover all districts.
