Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday honoured eminent dramatist Bhaben Bora with the Sonit Konwar Gajen Baruah Award.

The award was given away at a function in Jamugurihat town of Sonitpur district.

Bora has been honoured with the prestigious award for popularizing Barechahariya Bhaona across Assam.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, a citation and an angavastram.

The function was attended by state cultural affairs minister Naba Kumar Doley, BJP MLA Padma Hazarika among other dignitaries.

The Sonit Konwar Gajen Baruah Award was instituted by the state government in 2017 in the name of the Vaishnavite cultural icon Gajen Baruah to honour eminent artists who have significantly contributed to promoting Vaishavite culture.

Barechaharia Bhaona has been in practice for 213 years since its inception in 1797 AD at Jamugurihat.
