Digboi: The father of a 12-year-old girl, who allegedly attempted to end her life by jumping from the first floor of Delhi Public School (DPS) Digboi in Tinsukia district, has filed a complaint with the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) alleging negligence and mishandling by the school administration.

The girl, who sustained a serious injury after attempting suicide by jumping from the first floor of the school building on May 25, is recovering in the hospital.

According to the complaint, the girl was accused of writing “objectionable comments” in a classmate’s register, leading to an altercation.

The school counsellor, Isha Chakraborty Baroi, allegedly called the girl for counselling sessions daily for 18 days without informing her parents.

The girl’s father alleged that the school did not contact him despite his workplace being only 5 km away, nor did they inform his wife who frequently visited the school.

He alleged that the counsellor herself needs “mental counselling” for failing to recognize a common teenage tendency to avoid parental involvement.

The complaint states that on May 25, the counsellor again called the girl student to her chamber before class, leading to her frustration and subsequent attempt to end her life.

The girl’s father blamed the school for not utilizing the official WhatsApp group where his contact information was readily available and instead relying on a personal phone number from his daughter.

He said the lack of communication and a delayed response from the school after the incident.

The ASCPCR has taken cognizance of the complaint and initiated an investigation.

Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s father with Digboi police station, police have also begun their investigation and recorded statements from various stakeholders at the school

However, the school administration and the AOD Management have yet to take any action.
