Digboi: In a major anti-narcotics operation, Digboi Police on Thursday seized 3.134 kg of suspected cannabis (ganja) and arrested two alleged drug peddlers after intercepting a vehicle at Balijan Gaon on Assam’s Digboi–Duliajan Road.
Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted a white Hyundai i10 (AS-05-L-8866) travelling from Bhadoi Panchali in Duliajan to Digboi.
The occupants were identified as Akon Hazarika (55), son of late Bhuban Hazarika, and Biplab Boro (25), son of Sunaram Boro, both residents of Betoni Gaon under Duliajan Police Station in Dibrugarh district.
During a lawful search, police recovered two packets of suspected cannabis weighing 2.078 kg and 1.056 kg, respectively, with a total net weight of 3.134 kg.
The team also seized two mobile phones, Rs 2,750 in cash, and the vehicle allegedly used to transport the contraband.
The accused were arrested, while the seized narcotics and other articles were taken into custody after all legal formalities were completed.
A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway.
Co-District Superintendent of Police, Digboi, Himangshu Gohain, said the operation reflects the police’s uncompromising stand against the drug menace.
“We have adopted a zero-tolerance policy against narcotics and anti-social elements. Intelligence-based operations will continue relentlessly, and every individual involved in drug trafficking or organised crime will face stringent legal action. There will be no safe haven for drug peddlers within the Digboi jurisdiction,” Gohain said.
Officer-in-Charge of Digboi Police Station, Inspector Pranjal Chetia, said police are also working to identify the entire network behind the seized consignment.
“Our focus is not limited to arrests. We are committed to dismantling the complete supply chain of narcotics through sustained intelligence-driven operations. The campaign against drug peddlers will continue with full force,” Chetia said.
Police are now investigating the source and destination of the contraband and examining its possible links to a wider inter-district drug trafficking network.
