Digboi: The 77th Republic Day was observed across Digboi on Sunday with multiple programmes held by political organisations, the civil administration and industrial establishments.

The Digboi Block Congress Committee emerged as a focal point of the celebrations, organising a large and spirited Republic Day programme at Rajiv Bhawan that drew enthusiastic participation from senior leaders and grassroots workers. The event carried an added significance as it was held in the tradition established by late Rameswar Dhanowar, veteran Congress leader and former minister, under whose leadership Republic Day observances in Digboi had consistently witnessed strong public participation.

The programme was led by Bishnu Chetry, President of the Digboi Block Congress Committee.

As part of the observance, a ceremonial lamp was lit at Gandhi Maidam, followed by the distribution of fruits to patients at Digboi Civil Hospital, underscoring the partyโ€™s emphasis on public service on a national occasion.

Addressing party workers, Bishnu Chetry, President of the Digboi Block Congress Committee, said the strong turnout reflected a revival of the partyโ€™s organisational strength in the area.

โ€œFollowing the demise of veteran Congress MLA Rameswar Dhanowar, the party in Digboi experienced a phase of organisational decline. The massive and spirited gathering witnessed today reflects renewed motivation, unity and patriotic commitment to the nation,โ€ he said.

Dulal Moran, noted scholar and social activist, and a probable Congress ticket aspirant from the Digboi constituency, also addressed the gathering, urging party workers to reaffirm their commitment to democratic and constitutional values.

On the official front, the national tricolour was hoisted at Tingrai in a programme organised by the Digboi Co-District Commissioner. Local legislator Suren Phukan unfurled the national flag at Digboi Civil Hospital and the MP Office, paying tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters and highlighting the significance of Republic Day.

Adding to the significance of the day, AOD Indian Oil continued its long-standing tradition of observing Republic Day at the historic Jubilee Playground with patriotic fervour. Executive Director and Refinery Head Rahul Prashant hoisted the national flag in the presence of senior Indian Oil officials and invited dignitaries, reaffirming the organisationโ€™s commitment to national service and institutional excellence.
