Dibrugarh: Members of the Asomiya Yuva Mancha and Asomiya Mahila Mancha staged a demonstration at Chowkidingee Chariali in Dibrugarh on Friday, raising a series of demands, including expedited justice for cultural icon Zubeen Garg and the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Assam.
The protesters also sought the deportation of illegal immigrants through strict enforcement of the Assam Accord and urged the state government to take immediate measures to curb the rising prices of essential commodities.
Ranu Tamuli, secretary of the Asomiya Mahila Mancha, expressed concern over the perceived delay in legal proceedings regarding Zubeen Garg.
“The Chief Minister had earlier assured justice for Zubeen da, but now says it is up to the judiciary. We support the courts, but proceedings need to be expedited. More than six months have passed since the incident. Justice must be delivered soon, even as elections approach,” Tamuli said. She further proposed the constitution of a fast-track court to handle the matter.
A leader from the Asomiya Yuva Mancha criticised the government for the prolonged delay in addressing core regional issues. He highlighted that despite being in power for nearly a decade, the administration has yet to finalise the ILP system for the state.
“We demand that the Chief Minister ensure justice for Zubeen Garg, implement the Inner Line Permit across the state, and take steps to address the increase in prices of essential items like rice, vegetables, and fuel,” the youth leader stated.
The demonstrators also raised concerns over illegal immigration from Bangladesh, calling it a threat to indigenous rights and Assamese culture.
