The extortionists allegedly tried to snatch the pistol of the policemen.

Lahowal sub-inspector Dibyajyoti Konwar and another constable were injured during the scuffle.

The four extortionists have been identified as Sahnaj Hussain (27), Abradul Hussain (65), Saharuddin Ali (27) and Samir Ansari (44).

Dibrugarh additional superintendent of police (headquarter) Padmanav Baruah said, “We have arrested four of them and sent them to the court. The two were kidnapped while they were on their way towards Lahowal.”

“After the kidnapping, the two were tied to a tree with a rope and the kidnappers demanded Rs 7 lakh from them. After getting information, a team from Lahowal police station reached there and rescued them from the clutches of the extortionists,” Baruah said.

A case has been registered at Lohowal police station, he added.

Sources said Abradul Hussain, the owner of a brick kiln plant, made the plan of kidnapping with his son, Sahnaj.

“Abradul Hussain had some misunderstanding with a Tinsukia-based businessman for whom the two persons work. So, he was behind the kidnapping plan and the extortion demand of Rs 7 lakh,” the ASP said.
