Dibrugarh Police on Friday detained a man and his wife for illegally digging the land of Pujashree old age home at Lekai, Thakurthan in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

Pujashree old age home is situated 15 km from Dibrugarh town.

The old age home, surrounded by lush green tea garden, is a beautiful place for the old-age people to live.

“We have detained Baijan Gogoi and his wife Babyka Gogoi for questioning on the digging of Pujashree old age home’s land,” said Dipankar Jyoti Borah, in-charge of Milan Nagar police outpost.

“The old age home authority has filed a complaint at Milan Nagar police outpost and as per the complaint, we have started an investigation and detained Gogoi and his wife.

“They confessed that they had dug the land using JCB and said they didn’t know that the land belongs to the old age home. It was a civil case. So, we have sent the case to the court with section 107,” the police officer said.

Devajani Changmai Gogoi (Dipa), president of Pujashree old age home said, “The land belongs to Pujashree old age home under dag no 31/32(3 katha 6 lecha) patta no 1. Without informing us, how can a person dig our old age home’s land.”

“It is a social organization and a shelter home for old age people, who are driven out from their home by their children. This type of illegal thing would not be tolerated further,” Gogoi said.

“We have been running this old age home for the last three years without any nuisance but now someone wants to create problems in the shelter home by doing such kind of activity,” she added.

Pujashree old age home has a capacity of 20 beds.
