Cyber fraud army tripura Assam: Dibrugarh man loses Rs 70 lakh to scammers, police recover full amount

Guwahati: The cyber cell of Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) saved a Dibrugarh man from losing a whopping Rs 70 lakh to “fraudsters.”

The victim Pankaj Jain, a resident of Dibrugarh Town, received a call on July 22, 2024, from an unknown person identifying himself as an employee of US-based FedEx Corporation.

The caller informed Jain that a consignment sent by him to Taiwan had been seized by the Mumbai Cyber Crime Office.

The caller told Jain that the sleuths of Mumbai Cyber Cell had recovered MDMA, an addictive stimulant, from the consignment he had shipped.

Jain alleged that following this he was blackmailed of dire consequences through video and audio calls from the so-called Cyber Crime Office, Mumbai and thus swindled out Rs 70 lakh from his account.

The victim after finding out that he was duped, lodged a complaint via the 1930 helpline.

Cyber PS, CID, based on the complaint immediately launched an investigation and was able to revert back the whole defrauded amount to the account of the victim.
