Dibrugarh: Dibrugarh Airport on Thursday achieved a significant operational milestone with the commissioning of its extended runway and upgraded navigational infrastructure, marked by the successful landing of IndiGo flight 6E 893 (Kolkataโ€“Dibrugarh) at 8.38 a.m.

The modernisation project has enhanced the airportโ€™s operational capacity and safety standards. The runway has been extended from 1,830 metres to 2,291 metres, enabling the handling of larger aircraft and improving safety margins.

The upgrade also includes the installation of a 900-metre CAT-I approach lighting system, along with modern edge, threshold, and end lights to support safer operations, particularly during night landings.

Navigational capabilities have been strengthened with the deployment of Doppler Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range (DVOR) and High Power Distance Measuring Equipment (HP-DME). In addition, Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) lights and runway guard lights have been installed to provide critical visual guidance during landing and taxiing.

To address the regionโ€™s weather-related challenges, an Automatic Weather Observation System (AWOS) has also been integrated into the airportโ€™s infrastructure.

Airport Director Bangajit Saha said the upgrade would significantly enhance Dibrugarhโ€™s role as a key aviation hub for upper Assam and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. He noted that the extended runway and CAT-I systems are expected to reduce flight disruptions during the monsoon and winter fog seasons, improving overall reliability.

The improvements are also likely to boost economic activity and tourism in the region by ensuring more consistent connectivity with major cities.

To mark the occasion, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) felicitated the pilot and first officer of the inaugural flight, formally signalling the airportโ€™s transition to higher-capacity operations.
