The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhubri, Anant Lal Gyani, in the light of the killings in Dhola (in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam) – has appealed to the people not to get “carried away by rumours and misinformation campaign indulged in by elements with vested interests”.
Gyani, who was addressing media persons at his office chamber on Friday, has also sought the help of people “across caste and creed – including the media – to quell such misinformation propaganda and to maintain peace and tranquility in Dhubri district”.

The DC further informed the media persons that the district administration and police has already set up a cyber-cell and it is continuously monitoring the activities of different social media sites. Longneet Terang, Superintendent of Police (SP), Dhubri, who was also present during the Press meet, stated, “The brutal killing of five persons by suspected United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militants at Dhola in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam on Thursday has created an atmosphere of disquiet in different parts of the State for which the Dhubri district administration and police administration has asked people to remain alert and vigil against divisive forces hell bent on creating disturbances in the society.”
The DC warned that the district administration will not spare anybody found to be involved in spreading rumours to create law and order problem. He also asked the people to report any incident to the nearest police station immediately.
However, there has been no report of any untoward incidents in the district so far. Nevertheless, the district administration is taking no chance and is keeping a close watch on the social media. A number of organisations took out a candle light procession in Dhubri and Gauripur towns, respectively, on Friday evening to protest against the brutal killing of innocent people in Dhola.
