Assam: Despite curfew five shops torched in Tinsukia

As protests continue across Assam, five shops were set ablaze by miscreants at Hijuguri in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on Monday.

According to reports, the shops were torched by miscreants last midnight.

The incident took place despite night curfew is being imposed in the district.

An abandoned house was torched by miscreants at Sripuria area of Tinsukia.

The incident took place at Gate No. 700.

According to sources, several shops were partially damaged in the fire at Hijuguri area of Tinsukia.

Earlier on December 11, four shops were torched by miscreants during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) protest at the same locality of Tinsukia.

The CAB became an Act after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the bill on Thursday.

Meanwhile, curfew was relaxed in Tinsukia from 5 am to 4 pm.

According to police, it was a handiwork of miscreants who tried to disturb the “peaceful” atmosphere in the state.

“Our investigation is on. We have identified the persons behind the act and we will take strict action against them as per the law.  No one has been arrested in connection with the case so far,” Tinsukia additional superintendent of police (headquarters) Ashif Ahmed said.

On the other hand, a peaceful protest was staged at Tinsukia against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

People from all walks of life came out in protest against the CAA.

The Anchalik committee of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) took out a protest rally against the CAA in Tinsukia.

The protesters holding placards and banners participated in the rally.
