Guwahati: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption of the Assam Police arrested a government official from the District Commissioner’s office in Silchar, Cachar on Wednesday.
The accused has been identified Saumyabrata Bhattacharjee, a senior district administrative assistant at the office of the District Commissioner in Cachar.

The arrest was made following a complaint filed with the police, alleging that Bhattacharjee had demanded a bribe of Rs. 2,000 from the complainant in connection with a land-related issue.
The complainant, unwilling to pay the bribe, reported the matter to the Directorate for legal intervention.
A team from the Directorate set up a trap in the office of the District Commissioner and Bhattacharjee was apprehended.

The police said that they nabbed the accused government official while accepting the bribe from the complainant.
The bribe money was recovered from Bhattacharjee and seized in the presence of independent witnesses.
A case has been registered at the ACB Police Station on June 12, 2024, under ACB PS Case No. 47/2024, invoking Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
