Manipur Assam: Daylight armed robbery attempt thwarted in Guwahati

Guwahati: Locals of the Hedayatpur area in Guwahati, Assam apprehended an alleged armed robber on Wednesday.

Locals claimed that the accused was nabbed moments after he attempted to rob a jewellery shop near Guwahati Club.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV.

The alleged robber, identified as Abhishek Thakur, entered the shop disguised as a customer.

Initially browsing jewellery sets, Thakur sprayed the shop owner and a staff member with an unknown substance.

In the ensuing chaos, Thakur snatched a jewellery set and attempted to flee.

However, the shop owner and his staff raised an immediate alarm and chased after Thakur.

Thakur was shortly nabbed by a group of locals on the roadside.

Despite brandishing a country-made pistol, Thakur was overpowered and was handed him over to the Latasil Police.

Police investigation revealed that Thakur, a resident of Lakhimpur’s Chetia village originally hailing from Bihar, works for an NGO in Guwahati.

During questioning, Thakur confessed to his financial woes as the motive behind the robbery and acquiring the weapon from the city’s Gandhi Basti area.

An investigation has been initiated.
