Darrang Police encountered a new modus operandi of carrying consignments of cannabis when an operational police team managed to recover more than 30 kg of cannabis hidden inside gunny bags filled with paddy.

Darrang Police seized the cannabis packed in paddy bags during the operation carried out on Tuesday night.

The consignment of cannabis was seized at Dhuba in Assam’s Darrang district.

Talking to media persons, Pranjal Bora, deputy commissioner of police (headquarters), Darrang, said, “During a ‘naka’ checking at Dhula under the supervision of the superintendent of police Sushanta, Biswa Sarma, the police intercepted a goods-carrying ‘tempo’ (four-wheeler) bearing registration number AS13-AC-1939.”

“On suspicion when the gunny bags were searched, cannabis, weighing more than 30 kgs in six packets, were recovered from inside the bags filled with paddy,” police officer Bora said.

The police arrested 26-year-old Gautam Sinha, a resident of Niz Dalgaon village under Dalgaon police station in Darrang district in connection with the case.

A case has been registered at the Dhula police station under the provisions of the NDPS Act.

Darrang Police while sharing the information on its Twitter handle on Wednesday wrote: “Acting on a tip off, during Naka checking a total of 30.355 KGs of suspected Ganja was recovered from a Mahindra Jito Vehicle.”

“Accordingly, it was seized and one Gautam Sinha of Nizdalgaon was apprehended in this connection,” it added.
