Darrang district administration supported by a huge contingent of armed security personnel on Monday carried out a massive eviction drive at Sipajhar in lower Assam’s Darrang district.

As many as 16 excavators were reportedly pressed into service since morning to free an area of around 4,500 bighas of government land encroached by around 800 families at 1 and No 3 Dholpur chapori.

No resistance was offered by the residents and families were seen shifting their belongings on their own.

The government is planning to make this river rine land free from encroachment for a proposed agriculture project worth several crores of rupees.

Sources the administration is also planning to carry out similar eviction drives in some other adjoining areas including No 2 Dholpur and Kirakara.
