COVID19 tests for teachers and staff of colleges and schools are underway in Lakhimpur district with swabs being collected from various campuses of the government educational institutions.

The massive test drive was kicked off in the district on Monday following the instructions from Assam health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in this regard.

Health and education minister Sarma instructed that all teachers and employees of the schools and colleges should get tested for COVID19 from August 21-30 before the planned reopening of educational institutions in Assam from September 1.

Only those teachers and employees, who test negative in the compulsory COVID19 test, will be able to resume their duties in their respective institutions from September 1, the instruction said.

The special Covid units from North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital have conducted tests in North Lakhimpur Govt. HS School, LTK College, OPD College, Panigaon, and Lakhimpur Girls College till Tuesday.

On Wednesday, swabs were collected from the teachers and employees of Lakhimpur Commerce College.

Almost 15,000 teachers of Lakhimpur district will be covered in this test drive.

Till Tuesday, Lakhimpur district recorded a single-day spike of 73 COVID19 positive cases.
