A village headman and his wife were arrested on Sunday by police on charges of physically assaulting an on duty police officer at Bokajan in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.
“The incident occurred in front of Bokajan Police Station where the officer was confronted by village head man Amit Mech alias Madan and the duo got into a verbal spat over imposing fine on a biker for not wearing helmet and riding without a valid license. The dispute later turned violent and Madan assaulted the officer along with his wife Riya Mech,” said OC Dimbeshwar Thakuria.
Madan assumed charges of village headman after the death of his father Amulya Mech.
Police have also recovered three sacks of rice along with a list of 28 beneficiaries from the residence of Amit.
A case under section 333/353 of the IPC has been registered against them and the duo would be produced in the court on Monday.
