Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Wednesday announced a statewide protest against the recent surge in LPG cylinder prices, intensifying its attack on the Centre over what it termed an โ€œunjustified economic burdenโ€ on households.

In a circular issued on March 18, APCC General Secretary Pradyut Bhuyan instructed all District Congress Committees to organise peaceful demonstrations across the state on Thursday, March 19. The protests are expected to be held in marketplaces and other prominent public locations to ensure maximum visibility and participation.

The decision comes amid rising public concern over the latest increase in both domestic and commercial LPG cylinder prices, which the party said has further strained household budgets already affected by inflation. The Congress also pointed to what it described as an โ€œacute shortageโ€ of LPG cylinders, adding to consumersโ€™ difficulties.

โ€œIn view of the severe hardships faced by the people of Assam due to the recent hike in domestic LPG prices and the continuing shortage of both domestic and commercial cylinders, it is imperative to raise a strong and united voice seeking immediate relief,โ€ the APCC said in the circular.

Acting on the directive of APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, the party has mobilised its organisational network across districts to ensure broad participation. Party leaders said the protests aim to highlight what they allege is the governmentโ€™s failure to stabilise prices of essential commodities.

The APCC has also supplied protest placards to its district units, signalling a coordinated effort to amplify public dissent and press for a rollback of the price hike.
