elections

With AGP-BJP “quick remarriage” after a bitter divorce not so long back, the Congress in Assam has pulled up its socks for a “fierce battle” in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sources in Rajiv Bhawan, the headquarters of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), told Northeast Now on Wednesday that the party high-command is giving final touches to the list of candidates for the 14 seats in Assam.

While the three-phase Lok Sabha election is scheduled to be held on April 11, 18 and 23 next in Assam, the Congress is likely to be the first party to announce its list of candidates in Assam. As per reports, Bhubaneswar Kalita, the sitting Rajya Sabha MP, will be Congress’s candidate in Mangaldoi seat.

“Early announcement of the candidates will help us to plan the logistics for the election campaign,” a senior Congress leader said, adding that they are going to go all out against the BJP and its allies, including the AGP and BPF in the electoral battle.

So far, the Congress did not get into any form of pre-poll alliances with any political party in Assam. The party is likely to contest all the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state. At present, the Congress has three members in the Lok Sabha from Assam, while the BJP has seven.

Though the ruling BJP almost swept the recently held panchayat elections, the Congress leaders are still hopeful to put up a tough fight in the Lok Sabha election against the BJP in Assam.
