Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah has suspended party MLA Sherman Ali for “repeatedly violating party discipline”.

The decision of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) comes after Ali’s failure to reply to the show-cause notice served to him.

Ali was arrested by police on Saturday from his residence in MLA Hostel at Dispur for making “communal and provocative” remarks.

The order, issued by Bobbeeta Sharma, general secretary, APCC, says: “Hon’ble president APCC Bhupen Kumar Borah has suspended Sri Sherrnan Ali Ahmed, MLA, member ACLP from Congress Party with immediate effect for repeatedly violating party discipline.”

Assam Congress gave three days to Sherman Ali to submit his reply.

As the MLA failed to reply within three days of the issuance of the notice, APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah ordered his suspension from the party on Monday with immediate effect.

However, in the order, the APCC has not mentioned the time period of the suspension.

Sherman Ali is currently under the custody of the Panbazar Police.

The court remanded Baghbor MLA Ali to two-day police custody with effect from Sunday.

He was arrested on the basis of a case registered in Panbazar police station.

The case (No 510/21) was registered under sections 153/153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Two other cases against Ali have been registered in Dispur and Geetanagar police stations.

MLA Ali in a statement justified the killing of eight people in Darrang district in 1983 during the Assam agitation, who were declared “martyrs” and he termed them as “killers”.

While insulting the martyrs, the Baghbor MLA said, “The killer will never be glorified. They are condemned.”
