Digboi: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee’s recent organisational appointments are being viewed as a calculated political move ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with the party clearly signalling an aggressive push to rebuild its base and challenge the BJP at the constituency level.
In Digboi, the appointment of Bishnu Jaisey as Block Congress Committee President has emerged as a focal point of the reshuffle.
The decision has triggered strong enthusiasm across party ranks, with several Congress wings and frontal organisations felicitating Jaisey at Rajiv Bhawan, Digboi, amid a packed gathering of party leaders, workers, and supporters.
The show of strength underscored renewed confidence within the Congress organisation in Digboi, a constituency currently held by the BJP and considered politically crucial in Upper Assam.
Senior leaders present included Biraj Rajkonwar, Secretary, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee; Rajib Moran, Vice President, Disaster and Rehabilitation Management Department, APCC; Munindra Das, President, Digboi Block Youth Congress Committee; and Pulikanta Moran, President, Assembly Youth Congress, reflecting coordinated backing from both senior and youth leadership.
Addressing the gathering, Biraj Rajkonwar said that Bishnu Jaisey’s decades-long dedication, sacrifice, and organisational work for the Congress in Digboi had finally been recognised by the party’s top leadership.
He said the appointment demonstrated the Congress’s intent to rely on tested grassroots leaders to lead its electoral fight.
Rajib Moran said the appointment had decisively lifted the morale of party cadres and added that the Congress is now preparing to mount a sustained and serious political challenge to the BJP in Digboi.
He said the leadership change marked the beginning of a more assertive phase of Congress politics in the constituency.
A senior Congress leader highlighted Jaisey’s strongest asset, saying that his ability to work across party wings and maintain close contact with people at the grassroots makes him a rare unifying figure. “His down-to-earth nature gives him a strong personal connect with the masses, which the party sees as a critical counter to the BJP’s organisational machinery,” the leader said.
Speaking after taking charge, Bishnu Jaisey thanked the Congress high command and the APCC leadership for placing confidence in him at a decisive political moment. He said the immediate focus would be on strengthening booth-level organisation, energising workers, and taking up public issues that have remained neglected under BJP rule.
He asserted that the Congress would fight the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections in Digboi with full strength and unity.
Veteran Congress leaders from Digboi, including Bhaskar Jiban Baruah, Mithu Rajak, and Prasana Borah, also welcomed the decision, stating that Jaisey’s elevation would open a new and decisive chapter for the Congress in Digboi, positioning the party for a serious electoral comeback.
