Guwahati: Days after Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah claimed that if elected to power, the “new government” would seize and investigate the property of the Chief Minister’s wife, the Income Tax Department has issued a formal summons to Borah.

The notice requires Borah’s presence at the Aayakar Bhawan in Guwahati on August 16, 2024, at 1:00 PM.

The summons has directed Borah to provide evidence and produce specific books of accounts or other relevant documents for an ongoing investigation.

He has the option to appear in person or send an authorized representative.

The notice also stipulates that Borah must remain on the premises until given explicit permission to leave.

The notice further warns of potential penalties under the Income Tax Act, 1961. Should Borah fail to comply—by not attending, not providing evidence, or failing to produce the required documents—he may face a fine of Rs. 10,000 for each infraction under Section 272A(1)(c) of the Act.
