The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Friday expelled Golaghat MLA and former PWD minister Ajanta Neog from the primary membership of the party for “anti-party activities”.

Neog has been expelled from the party with immediate effect, APCC general secretary (Org) Ranjan Bora said.

“This has the approval of honourable Congress president,” Bora added.

The party took the step following the speculations that Neog would switch over to the BJP.

The former Congress minister had recently met Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal at his official residence in Guwahati.

The four-time Congress MLA had a closed-door meeting with chief minister Sonowal and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that last for more than one hour.

The APCC on December 19 had removed Neog from an important post of the party’s organisation following the meeting.

Neog was removed from the post of district Congress committee president of Golaghat with immediate effect.

Speculations are rife that Neog will join the saffron party in presence of home minister Amit Shah, who will visit the state on Saturday.

However, minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that Neog will not join the BJP on Saturday.

“Home minister Amit Shah will come to Guwahati on an official visit. No one will join the party in his official programme,” Sarma said.
