Guwahati: State Congress committee Chief Bhupen Borah expressing confidence in the INDIA bloc in Assam said that Congress will form district-level alliances with anti-BJP parties supportive of the INDIA alliance for the forthcoming panchayat elections.

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said that the panchayat polls would be held in November, with a delimitation exercise for all development blocks to precede the polls.

Borah said that the Congress’s immediate objective is to secure victory in the panchayat polls.

He stated that district Congress committees will have complete autonomy to finalize the candidate lists, following consultations with opposition allies within the INDIA bloc and its local equivalent, the United Opposition Forum-Assam.

Given the extensive number of candidates, which can reach up to 1,200 per district, this autonomy is deemed necessary, he stated

“We will instruct the district committees to discuss alliance strategies with district-level leaders of our state-level alliance partners, continuing the collaboration we had during the Lok Sabha elections,” Borah said.
