Bajali: A young entrepreneur from Assam’s Bajali district has expanded his poultry business by introducing 5,000 Sonali layer birds for commercial egg production, citing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent appeal to make the state self-reliant in egg production as a source of inspiration.
Shourav Jyoti Das, a resident of Patacharkuchi, started his poultry farming venture three years ago and has gradually expanded the business through commercial farming.
The latest expansion is expected to increase egg production while contributing to local employment and reducing Assam’s dependence on eggs sourced from outside the state.
Apart from poultry farming, Das follows an integrated farming model that includes broiler poultry, fish farming, duck rearing, indigenous chicken and goat husbandry. The diversified approach enables year-round income while making efficient use of available resources.
“The Chief Minister’s appeal to make Assam self-reliant in egg production inspired me to expand my poultry farm with 5,000 layer birds. I believe agriculture and poultry farming offer immense opportunities for young entrepreneurs,” Das said.
He said poultry farming offers a sustainable source of income and expressed hope that his experience would encourage more young people to take up entrepreneurship instead of waiting for government jobs.
The Assam government has been promoting poultry farming through various schemes aimed at increasing egg production, supporting rural entrepreneurs and improving self-sufficiency in the sector.
