Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday felicitated Rupamoni Gorh, the first Assamese woman mountaineer to successfully scale Mount Everest, along with her team leader Bhanita Timungpi, at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur on July 26, 2026.
At a felicitation ceremony, Sarma honoured Gorh with a phulam gamusa, a bouquet and a traditional xorai, besides presenting her with a cheque of Rs 10 lakh in recognition of her achievement.
The Chief Minister said the decision to offer Gorh a job in the Assam Police was in recognition of her contribution to bringing laurels to the state and to encourage young people to pursue adventure sports.
Congratulating the mountaineer, Sarma described her successful ascent of the world’s highest peak as a landmark achievement for Assam and said it would inspire aspiring sportspersons across the state.
Gorh became the first Assamese woman mountaineer to conquer Mount Everest, one of the world’s most challenging climbing expeditions. Her achievement has been widely recognised across Assam as a milestone for the state’s adventure sports community.
