GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday (February 06), hailed the central government for its decision to completely fence the entire India-Myanmar border in the Northeast.

Commending the central government’s decision, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this “bold decision which will have a huge stabilising impact on the entire Northeast region”.

“State-of-the-art fencing, shall also minimise incidents of cross border insurgency and infiltration through better surveillance,” the Assam chief minister said.

It may be mentioned here that union home minister Amit Shah, on Tuesday (February 6), said that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government is ‘committed’ to build impenetrable borders.

Amit Shah said that the union government has decided to construct a fence along the entire 1643-kilometre-long India-Myanmar border in the Northeast.

“To facilitate better surveillance, a patrol track along the border will also be paved,” union home minister Amit Shah said.

The union home minster added that out of the total border length, a 10-kilometre stretch at Moreh in Tengnoupal district of Manipur, has already been fenced.

“Furthermore, two pilot projects of fencing through a Hybrid Surveillance System (HSS) are under execution. The government will fence a stretch of one kilometre each in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur,” he added.

Amit Shah further said: “Additionally, fence works covering approximately 20 kilometres in Manipur have also been approved and the work will start soon.”
