All classes from VI to VIII in schools will remain closed in all districts with more than 100 active Covid-19 cases in Assam.

Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this while interacting with the media at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati on Monday.

“Classes from VI to VIII will remain closed from now in districts with more than 100 active Covid-19 cases. However, classes of IX and X standards and those of colleges will continue to be held on alternate days,” said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Only 50 per cent students are allowed to attend classes at a time,” he said.

The state education department has authorized the district administration in all such districts to close down classes from VI to VIII in all government and private schools in view of the alarming rise in positive cases.

The state government had earlier issued orders to suspend regular classes in the elementary standards from the pre-primary level to class V in all district with more than 100 Covid-19 cases.

The classes of the elementary standards in majority of the schools are being conducted online.

The order issued by the education department has also asked the schools to take necessary steps to conduct classes of VI to VII standards online.

A total of 1,844 people have tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.

There are currently 15,470 active cases in Assam, with the majority in Kamrup (Metro) district.
